Scar, SEM

Scar. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a scar (lower right) on the skin of the forearm. A scar results from the healing of a wound. New collagen fibres replace the damaged tissue. However, the new tissue is not laid down in exactly the same way. This results in thicker paler tissue that does not carry out the same functions as the lost skin. This scar tissue does not have any hair follicles or sweat glands and is less resistant to the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. Magnification: x25 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
